Nigigoonsiminikaaning First Nation Flood Claim Update

The Rainy Lake Flooding Claim has been in process since January of 1998 and is now in the final stages of the settlement.

In 2010, the leadership of Nigigoonsiminikaaning First Nation at the time passed a Band Council Resolution to enter into negotiations with the Provincial and Federal Governments, which resulted in the Agreement in Principal in July of 2017.

A tremendous amount of work has been accomplished to date and with the completion of the surveys for Reserves 26B & 26C the Federal Government must complete the survey of Reserve 26A. The final survey was scheduled to be completed in March of 2019. Unfortunately this process has been delayed due to the Federal Government.

Upon completion of the final survey, the surveys must be approved by the Federal Government, which will take up to 6 weeks. After the surveys are approved, Nigigoonsiminikaaning First Nation will conduct a vote to ratify the 75 Million dollar settlement with a tentative date in mid July 2019. The membership will have the opportunity to vote on the Per Capita Payment and the allocation of the Trust.

Pending ratification, Nigigoonsiminikaaning First Nation has secured a loan with Peace Hills Trust that can only be accessed to administer the Per Capita Payments to each member immediately, as the Federal Government will transfer the funds to the First Nation in November of 2019, which will repay the loan.

Pending an appeal, the loan with Peace Hills Trust will be declined and the Federal Government will wait a mandatory 6-week period to make a decision to follow through with the settlement or withdraw the offer to settle with Nigigoonsiminikaaning First Nation.

This process has be time consuming and delayed due to the Federal Governments ability to conduct the required steps of the agreement. Our community will soon be in a position to determine the future of Nigigoonsiminikaaning First Nation.

As the vote approaches, more information will be sent to Nigigoonsiminikaaning First Nation membership.

We thank you for your patience and understanding during this process.
